| Govt at receiving end in SC on Army Chief petition (2012-02-03) The Union Government was today in the dock in the Supreme Court when the petition of Army Chief General V K Singh on his Date of Birth (DoB) row came up for hearing. A bench comprising Justices R M Lodha and H L Gokhale told Attorney General V E Vahanvati that the order of the government dated December 30, 2011 rejecting the statutory complaint of the Army Chief is vitiated due to the wrong procedure adopted. He was asked whether the government would like to withdraw the order. Mr Vahanvati, who appeared along with the Solicitor General Roghinton Nariman, sought time to seek instructions from the Defence Ministry. |
| SC issues notices in Gujarat Lokayukta case (2012-02-03) The Supreme Court today issued notices to Gujarat Lokayukta Justice (retd) R A Mehta, the Principal Secretary to the State Governor and an NGO on the petition filed by the state government against the State High Court order upholding the appointment of Justice Mehta as state Lokayukta. A bench comprising Justices B S Chauhan and J S Khehar issued notices after hearing Counsel for State of Gujarat who contended that the action of Governor Kamla Beniwal in appointing Justice Mehta as state Lokayukta without taking the Gujarat government into confidence was illegal. It amounted to an assault on the federal structure of the Constitution, the Counsel added. |

| Bombay HC grants bail to Best Bakery convict on medical grounds (2012-02-02) The Bombay High Court today granted bail to a convict in the 2002 Best Bakery case of Gujarat on medical grounds. A division bench of Justices V M Kanade and P D Kode directed the petitioner, an HIV-positive man to submit a personal bond of Rs 5,000. He is the first person in the case to be granted bail after an appeal was filed in the high court against the conviction. |

| Chronology of 2G case (2012-02-02) Supreme Court today ordered cancellation of 122 licenses in 2G spectrum allocation scam. Here is a chronology: --On January 10, 2008, licenses were issued by Department of Telecom on first come, first serve basis. --On May 4, 2009, a self help group complained to CVC about the discrepancy in the allocation of licenses to Loop Telecom. --In 2009, CVC asked CBI to investigate the matter. --On July 1, 2009, Delhi high court declared the postponement of last date of allocation as illegal. --On October 21 2009, CBI registered unnamed cases against DoT and some private companies, started investigation and raided various offices. --On March 13, 2010, the apex court upheld the verdict of Delhi high court regarding the postponement of last date of allocation as illegal. --On March 31, 2010, CAG highlighted the large scale irregularities in the spectrum allocation. | Karnataka HC appoints expert committee to study man-elephant conflict (2012-02-02) In the wake of increasing incidents of wild elephants entering human settlements following their shrinking habitat, the Karnataka High Court has recently appointed an elephant experts' Action Committee to study the man-wild conflict. According to sources, environment scientist Raman Sukumar has been appointed as the committee's chairman with experts from various fields -- Ajaikumar Desai, Sharashchandra Leele, C Basappanavar, S S Bhat, N Ravindranath Kamath, B R Deepak, M K Madhusudan, V V Angadi as its members. |
